Il a été condamné à mort en 1998 pour le meurtre de James Brooks, tué au cours d'un vol à main armée en 1997.

Dear Governor,
While I sympathize with the family of James Brooks and do not condone the way in which he lost his life, I am opposed to executing Calvin Shuler, and to capital punishment in general.
The death penalty has not been proved to be a deterrent and the public can be protected from further danger from such men as Shuler by long term imprisonment. I urge you to commute this man's sentence and to support a moratorium in South Carolina which will bring the State into line with the practice of most evolved countries.
